Pets With Disabilities - Successful Disabled Pet
Adoptions Archive 2002
SHELTERS, HUMANE SOCIETIES, VETERINARIANS: WHEN REQUESTING WE LIST A DISABLED ANIMAL THAT NEEDS A HOME,
PLEASE EMAIL PETS WITH DISABILITIES WITH AN INFORMATIVE BIO, PET'S
LOCATION, PICTURE (NO HUMANS PLEASE) AND ACCURATE CONTACT INFORMATION. PLEASE KEEP US POSTED ON HOW AND WHEN THE
DOG OR CAT FINDS A HOME, SO THAT WE CAN KEEP OUR SITE UPDATED. THANK YOU.
Josie was adopted in 2002. Josie is partially blind, and partially deaf.
It appears she can see shadows and can hear loud noises. However, her
disabilities do not stop her from giving lots of love and for looking for
a home where she'll get lots of love in return. Cats with disabilities can
adapt easily to family life. Josie uses her
litter box, is FeLV negative, and is UTD on shots. She is a lovely Siamese
mix with blue eyes.
This is Spencer, a beagle, cocker spaniel mix, male puppy.
He has been adopted. He is sweet, adorable, and looking for someone who
won't mind a three legged dog.
His foot was deformed at birth and the leg will have to be amputated.
He love dogs, cats, and people.
Jack has been adopted. He is purebred cocker spaniel, neutered, very sweet
little dog. Good with other dogs, seems to be perfectly fine with cats, too.
Cookie has been adopted. She is deaf. She is spayed and current on all her shots.
She is a very affectionate, lap cat.
Keller hs been adopted. Keller is a long haired white male kitten. He doesn't seem to
like other cats, but is very fond of dogs. Keller has been excellent about
using a litter box, however he has been kept confined and does not have full run of the
house. Keller has this exceptional ability of causing all who hold him to
fall in love with him. There is something very special
about this kitty; he simply melts into
your arms, after a good sniff all around he snuggles and purrs and is
a sure cure for any winter blues. He cannot get enough cuddling.
Aldo has been adopted. Aldo is a handsome male, German Shepherd/Chow Chow mix,
reddish in color, very friendly, who gets along well with other dogs and children.
He will need to be neutered when adopted, but is up to date on shots. He has
hip dysplasia which is currently controlled with glucosamine.
Dolly has been adopted. Dolly is deaf. She is one year old, a sweetheart
and very loving. She does have a fascination with shadows and everyone
she sees, she barks at. She is not scared, she just wants to catch
them.
Simon has been adopted. Simon's back was fractured in two places,
and as a result, he is paralyzed in his back legs.
Piper has been adopted. His new mom has had previous blind and deaf
Dachshund experience. Located in Birmingham, Alabama, Piper is a wonderful
seven month old double dapple Dachshund. Due to the lack of care in the
breeding of his dappled parents he is blind and deaf, but no one has told him.
Piper loves to run and play with the other dogs in his foster home.
He also loves to cuddle with the humans there.
Piper was turned in to a shelter by back yard breeders because his
mother was once again in season. He was then turn over to Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue.
This little lady has been adopted. She is partially blind but in
good health. She doesn't have any trouble navigating furniture and can
see to some degree. Gets caught by surprise if you just reach down to
touch her, but she only moves her head away, not nipping or
barking. (In fact she's only barked twice all weekend). She's
very friendly and outgoing. Loves to cuddle up.
Blue has been adopted. Blue is a one year old Husk/Shepherd mix. She was
brought to the Humane Society when she was about seven
months old. She had a severe injury to her front leg that happened when
she was approximately six weeks old. The injury was never treateded.
Since the injury was so severe our only option was to amputate. She is a
much happier dog now that she is out of pain. She runs faster than the
other four legged dogs that she is fostered with. She is a super friendly
girl who is very active and loves to play. She gets along great with children,
other dogs and cats as well. She is looking for her forever home which
hopefully will have another dog to play with or children who will give her lots of attention.
Bert and Ernie have been adopted. Bert is bilaterally deaf, Ernie is
unilaterally deaf and has a scratch on his eye that is impairing his vision.
Both are 3 month old, purebred dogo argentinos who are otherwise in
excellent health. They will both be big dogs (dogos are normally 100 pounds), but have
excellent mild temperaments. They are beautiful dogs, with velvety
white coats and soulful faces. Note: Their ears have not been cropped and will never be.
Personality-wise, they are quite different. Bert is much more outgoing than
Ernie. Ernie is a little bit timid and likes to cuddle next to Bert while Bert munches on
one of his beloved rawhides. Ernie bumps into things sometimes, and
so he always treads very cautiously. It really touches your heart to see him as he moves
carefully through a room towards his objective. Bert, on the other
hand, just lumbers on up to anyone and anything without thinking twice about it.
Corky has been adopted from the Memphis Humane Society in Memphis, TN.
He is a beautiful neutered male blue Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mix.
Corky was hit by a car, received only minor injuries, from which he has
fully recovered, but Corky suffers from seizures unrelated to his accident.
He has epilepsy, and his medication is very simple to administer, a small
pill of phenabarbitol twice a day (with peanut butter because Corky loves peanut butter).
Wal-Mart is generously donating the phenabarbitol. Of course, Corky is a
handsome, very sweet, very energetic dog, and life in a cage is getting to him.
He is a three year old neutered male, current on his shots, including rabies,
current on his heartworm prevention. He is crate trained and housebroken. He is
waiting, waiting, waiting to love someone unconditionally. As you can see by
his picture, he is a handsome dog.
Snowpea has been adopted. Snowpea is a very special kitty. She is a
beautiful nine month old white Siamese mix. Snowpea is hearing impaired.
While it does appear that she can hear some very high pitched noises,
she cannot hear things at a normal tone. When Snowpea first came to us from a
local shelter she was very scared and timid, but in just a short time
in her loving foster home, she has really blossomed. Snowpea loves to do all the usual
kitty stuff like play with toy mice and balls.
Sammy has been adopted. Sammy is a four year old female yellow
lab who is deaf. We rescued her from another facility
where she was going to be euthanized.
She is spayed and up to date on all of her vaccinations.
She is a very happy gal who loves people! She loves to go for walks and loves treats.
She knows hand signals. She knows sit, stay and down.
She does well with male dogs and children ten years and older.
Babe has found a wonderful forever home in upstate NY. She is a
pure breed Australian Shepherd. Babe is 16 weeks old, is deaf and has
vision impairment but is not totally blind. Her condition is due to a
merle to merle breeding which produces a double resessive gene in some puppies which
causes these type problems. She is friendly, loveable, happy and very
active despite her set backs. She is otherwise healthy and up to date on all vaccinations
and will be spayed shortly. Babe is responding well to training she is
very smart and will start work with a viberating collar soon as well.
She gets along well with
other dogs but she will engage in normal puppy type play so the other
dog must like this kind of play. She gets along well with cats and loves every person she meets.
Babe is a wonderful puppy who has a very soft and fluffy coat.
Phil has been adopted. Phil is a five year old male with diabetes.
He is an INCREDIBLY sweet boy, and just about the mellowest cat we've ever met.
He needs daily insulin injections, but doesn't even flinch when they
are given. He's fine with other cats and dogs- ignores all other animals the same.
But he loves people and is thrilled to sit and nap in any available
lap. He's a stinker about food, most likely a combination of the diabetes and of being a
stray for a while.
Maddie has been adopted. Maddie is a seven month old female tortoiseshell
cat. Maddie was found while trying to nurse on her mother who had
been hit and killed in the road when she was only about four weeks old.
When she came into our rescue, one of her eyes had ruptured and the other
showed signs of trauma. For her health they were both removed and we suspect
that she never had any sight because she didn't seem to be slowed
down by these procedures. (the picture was taken before her second eye
was removed) She is a very independent girl who loves other animals.
She's not very people oriented, but will come by for the occasional petting and nap on a lap.
Beyla ws adopted in early March 2002. Beyla is a neutered, male Australian
Shepherd. He is visually and hearing impaired though he has use of both senses.
Beyla's physical problems are the result of irresponsible breeding of two merle
colored aussies. Beyla is a very well adjusted dog and is not at all limited by
his physical problems. He loves to play in the yard with my six dogs, is good
with cats and with kids. Beyla is very sweet and eager to please. He loves
people and is very eager to please. Beyla is crate trained and probably
housebroken (he is not crated if I am home and has not had any accidents
in the house). He is current on vaccines and is heartworm negative and on preventative.
Sugar and Spice have been adopted. Spice is blind and his sister Sugar acts
as his eyes. He follows her by staying close to her body. Sugar and Spice
were adopted out of our shelter and then returned through no real fault of
their own. Now they need a second chance. They are not aggressive, just
excitable in the kennel environment. Spice especially flops around and
throws himself up against you sometimes, I think because he is used to
feeling his way along instead of seeing. Sugar, naturally, is calmer.
Mufasa was adopted on February 15, 2002. He has a slight kidney problem and
will probably require special food (Science Diet K/D) for the rest of his life.
Otherwise, he is very healthy, loving, adorable and playful. He will make
someone a very good buddy. Mufasa gets
along great with other cats. He is very mellow and loving.
He is neutered and current on all shots.
Clyde has been adopted and is doing well in his new home. On September 1, 2001
a black and white non-neutered male Pit Bull Terrier was brought into Johnson
and Mckee Animal hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. The Humane Society of
Worcester County paid for the services on the dog. We were told that the
dog had been hit by a car a couple of days before the humane society was
called. As soon as they were called they picked him up and brought him
into the hospital. After examining him it was determined that he was
paralyzed and would more than like have no use of his back legs ever
again. As soon as the dog was brought in he stole everybody's heart.
So we named him "Clyde." The humane society tried to find someone that
would want to take care of a dog with a disability like Clyde's but had no
luck. They told us we could have the dog if someone wanted to take him home
with them, but everyone works very long hours and we all knew that wouldn't
be fair for Clyde. The humane society told us if we couldn't help find Clyde
a home he was going to have to be put to sleep. Because of Clyde's accident
he has a little bit of road rash on his belly that is being treated and is
looking better everyday. On September 20th Clyde was neutered, checked for
heart worms, he's negative, and updated on shots. All of the costs for shots,
neutering and heartworm checks have been paid for already. Let me tell you a
little about Clyde. He has a friend in the animal hospital, that is our
hospital cat, they both have a lot in common. They like to play with each
other in the mornings before we open and in the evenings before we close.
The cat has three legs and they have this bond with each other and look out
for each other. Clyde does get along with most animals. He has a great judge
in charcter, is loving, kind, and likes lots of attention. Since Clyde's
accident he has little or no control over his bodily functions, but he will
let you know when he has to go outside.
Adam was adopted in January 2002. Adam is an Australian Shepherd mix puppy.
His fur and markings are Aussie type but his muzzle is clearly different. Adam
is a very happy boy and he is very brave. He is not really shy at all. He
seems to get a long with kids and other dogs very well. He is very playfyl
but not high strung at all. He has a blue merle coat with a lot of white,
his chest is white and his head but his back and legs mainly blue merle. He is a sweet heart.
Adam is totally blind, does not appear to see shadows or anything. Blind
from birth, he also has limited hearing but does hear. You just must speak
a little louder. He is so smart.
Major was adopted in early January 2002. He is a Dalmation, male. He
is bilaterally deaf
Possible problems: May be food protective towards other dogs or very
small children. He is fine with kids that are about eight or older.
This problem has not been witnessed here in the shelter, only at the
home of the former adoptee. He does not show any fear or
aggression when waken from sleep.
Personality/Temperament: Major was found as a stray. This dal is
outgoing and fun. He loves to play outside and is very sweet. He is
getting better at not jumping. He was in foster care while our shelter
was closed for a few weeks and he was the favorite of the bunch, because
he has loads of personality. His facial and body expressions are intelligent
and also comical sometimes! This dog is always happy, and loves attention.
He REALLY would like a home. This dog will be a great pet, he just needs
someone willing to give him the TLC and training he needs.
Bue was adopted on January 5, 2002. Blue is a purebred lethal aussie (albino).
Blue has partial vision during the day, but when the sun goes down, he is blind.
He is also partially deaf. He enjoys the company of other dogs, but is mostly
a "people dog" and bonds quickly with his owner. He is able to function
perfectly and his disabilities are almost unrecognized. Blue gives a lot
of love and deserves to have a great home and love in return. He is the
product of bad breeding that caused a genetic defect. A lethal aussie
occurs when two merles are bred to get merle aussie puppies with blue
eyes. One in four are born like Blue.
